Building Your First Pedalboard: Signal Chain Order Explained
There is a piece of masking tape above my bench with an arrow and the words “guitar this way.” I put it there for a student who kept plugging his delay in backwards, and I left it because the question never stops coming. Pedal order is not a law, but there is a standard order that works for almost everyone, and it is worth learning before you start breaking it.
The standard order
From your guitar to your amp, the classic chain runs like this:
- Tuner
- Wah and filters
- Compressor
- Overdrive, distortion, fuzz
- Modulation (chorus, phaser, flanger, tremolo)
- Delay
- Reverb
The pedals near the guitar shape the raw note. The pedals near the amp shape the space the note lives in. Once you see it that way, the logic sticks.
Tuner first
The tuner goes first because it needs the cleanest possible signal to read the pitch. Put it after a fuzz and it will hunt around and give you nonsense. Most tuner pedals also mute the output when engaged, which lets you tune silently between songs and swap guitars without a pop.
Drive before modulation and time
This is the rule most worth respecting. A chorus placed before a distortion gets crushed into a warbly mess. A delay placed before a distortion produces repeats that each get distorted again, which smears into mud. Put the drive first and the modulation and delays afterward, and every repeat sounds like a clean copy of the distorted note. That is what your ear expects from records.
If you run several drive pedals, a common arrangement puts the lower-gain one first and the higher-gain one after it, so you can stack them for a bigger sound. Fuzz is the exception to a lot of rules: many vintage-style fuzzes want to see the guitar directly, so they often go before the wah, and they can behave strangely after a buffer.
Delay and reverb last
Delay and reverb are the room your sound sits in, so they go at the end. Delay before reverb is the usual choice because it keeps the repeats defined and lets the reverb wash over everything. Some players flip them for a more ambient wash, and that is fine.
If your amp has an effects loop, delay and reverb usually sound better placed there, after the preamp, especially when you use amp distortion. Without a loop, the end of the chain is the right spot.
Buffers, in plain language
Every true-bypass pedal and every cable adds a little capacitance that rolls off high end. With a couple of pedals and 20 feet of cable you may not notice. With eight pedals and 40 feet, your guitar starts to sound dull. A buffer is a tiny circuit that restores the signal’s strength. Many pedals include one, and a lone buffered pedal near the front of the chain, a tuner very often, is enough to keep your tone bright. If your board sounds duller when all the pedals are off than when the guitar is plugged straight into the amp, you need a buffer.
Power supply basics
The cheapest pedals run on 9-volt batteries, which die at the worst time. A proper power supply is the first real upgrade for any board. Two things to check:
- Voltage and polarity: nearly all pedals want 9 volts DC, center negative. A few want 12 or 18 volts. Read the label under the pedal.
- Current: each pedal draws a certain number of milliamps. Analog drives draw very little; digital delays and reverbs can draw 200 to 500 mA. Add them up and buy a supply with headroom.
Daisy-chain cables from a single adapter work for a few analog pedals but tend to hum once you add digital ones. Isolated outputs fix that, and cost $60 to $150.
Starting small
A first board does not need seven pedals. Tuner, one drive, one delay covers a huge amount of music; add a reverb if your amp lacks one. Then live with it for a few months. The guide on tube, solid-state and modeling amps matters here too, since a modeling amp may already give you half of these effects.
Plug the guitar into the arrow end, work your way to the amp, and trust your ears. The standard order is where you start, and every good board I have seen departs from it for a reason its owner can explain.
