Wampler Tumnus Deluxe Overdrive V2: Full Hands-on Test

The Wampler Tumnus Deluxe Overdrive V2 stands as one of the most flexible "Klon-inspired" overdrives on the boutique pedal market. With active equalization, a "Normal/Hot" gain mode switch, and both switchable buffer and true bypass, it aims to serve as a versatile boost and drive pedal for players looking to sculpt their core tone. After extended testing in numerous setups, from bedroom rigs to loud stages, here's a technical breakdown of its capabilities, strengths, and key quirks.

Build, Format, and Connections

Measuring 64 by 114 by 38 millimeters, the Tumnus Deluxe V2 is compact but not mini-sized, saving pedalboard space compared to other three-band overdrives. The enclosure is solidly built in the USA, with a weight and feel suggesting long-term reliability. The premium gold finish and clear white legending give it a high-end look.

  • Top-mounted jacks: Both input and output are standard 6.35 mm, positioned to minimize cable tangling and maximize pedalboard real estate.
  • Power: Accepts standard 9 volt DC (center-negative) adapters or a 9 volt battery. The pedal internally ups this to 21 volts for greater headroom, a technical choice that helps keep the sound open and undistorted at high settings.

Controls and Features

  • Gain, Level, Treble, Middle, Bass: The active equalization is beyond cosmetic. Each band (treble, middle, bass) provides a wide range, with the mids in particular letting you cut through dense mixes or dial them back for more transparency. Precision is high, small knob moves produce audible shifts, so subtle tweaks yield real differences.
  • Bypass switching: On the side, a tiny button lets you choose between true bypass (for fully removing the pedal from the signal path) or buffered bypass (to drive long cable runs or stabilize the signal into other pedals). This is set-and-forget, but its side placement can be awkward if pedals are tightly packed.
  • Normal/Hot toggle: The top-mounted mini-switch boosts the overall gain and compression when set to "Hot." In standard mode, the pedal easily covers clean boost to classic overdrive; "Hot" turns it into a mid/high-gain machine, suitable for heavier rock and modern blues.
  • Indicator and footswitch: The main switch engages or bypasses the effect, with a clear LED showing pedal status.

Sound: From Clean Boost to Driven Lead

Plugged into a clean amplifier, the Tumnus Deluxe V2 delivers a transparent yet musical boost with the gain turned low, ideal for pushing tube amps or tightening up an already overdriven channel. The added headroom (thanks to the internal voltage step-up) lets you raise the Level without unwanted distortion, keeping punch and clarity even with dynamic playing.

Turn up the Gain, and the pedal transitions smoothly from edge-of-breakup to a rich, harmonically-complex overdrive. The midrange EQ lets you craft throaty, vocal leads or scoop them out for rhythm work. Compared to basic Klon-inspired circuits, Wampler's active EQ genuinely expands the sonic palette. The treble control never gets ice-picky, and the bass knob can add low-end punch or keep things tight with humbucker-equipped guitars.

Activate the "Hot" mode, and the pedal takes on a more aggressive, compressed character. It can reach into the territory of classic hard rock and even verge on lighter modern rock gain, without losing note definition. For players wanting something more assertive than a standard Klon, the "Hot" option is a serious upgrade.

  • Stacking: The Tumnus Deluxe excels when run after a fuzz or another overdrive, acting as a tone shaper or solo boost. Users report excellent results stacking with pedals like Tube Screamers or RAT-style drives, fattening mids, increasing sustain, and adding cut.
  • Signal chain placement: The selectable buffer helps prevent tone loss at the end of a pedalboard or in boards with many true bypass pedals. Some players note mild treble loss in true bypass mode with the pedal off, depending on board layout and pickup selection.
  • Versatility: Works equally well with single coil or humbucker pickups. Each guitar's character remains present. The pedal can be "always on" for subtle thickening or engaged for solos and special parts.

Comparison and Context

Relative to its direct competition, the mini Tumnus, EHX Soul Food, or JHS Morning Glory, Wampler's Deluxe version is the most comprehensive for tonal control. The three-band EQ and "Hot" switch offer unique flexibility not found in simpler Klon-style copies. Build quality is competitive with US-made pedals in this price tier, and the added active electronics justify the cost for demanding users.

Some critical feedback does mention that the buffer/true bypass button is inconveniently placed, and rare cases of treble loss with the pedal disengaged have been observed in specific setups. The EQ, while powerful, can "overdo" things if set aggressively, making careful dialing-in crucial for best results. Flat settings offer a faithful "Klon" experience; more radical settings leave plenty of room for experimentation.

Bottom Line: Who Is It For?

The Wampler Tumnus Deluxe Overdrive V2 delivers a blend of classic tone and modern adjustability. Whether used as a transparent boost, an independent overdrive, or the centerpiece of a stacked gain setup, it stands out for its headroom, clarity, and flexible equalization. Guitarists seeking the iconic "Klon" flavor but requiring more sonic control, and those who frequently reconfigure their pedalboard, will find the Tumnus Deluxe V2 a robust, all-purpose choice. The build quality, American manufacturing, and real-world gig reliability round out an offering that matches its price point. For players prioritizing maximum tweakability without losing the essence of the original classic overdrive, Wampler's take earns high marks.

  • Impressive build quality with sturdy housing and smooth controls
  • Switchable buffer and true bypass provide flexibility for various signal chain setups
  • Compact design with top-mounted jacks saves pedalboard space
  • Exceptional performance with both single-coil and humbucker pickups

What bugged me

  • Buffer switch location on the side can be inconvenient on crowded pedalboards
  • EQ controls require careful adjustment to avoid exaggerated settings
  • Can be perceived as less transparent compared to some competitors
  • Some users report high noise in hot mode
  • Pricier than the smaller version, and not ideal for players seeking extreme gain or high transparency

Is it the right one for you?

Good pick if

Ideal for players seeking a versatile overdrive that covers clean boost to medium and even semi-high gain, with extensive EQ shaping. Great fit for those who want a robust pedal for both studio and stage, and who need compatibility with a variety of amps and guitar types.

Look elsewhere if

Not for those looking for a truly transparent boost, or who dislike midrange coloration found in Klon-style pedals. Also less suited for metal players needing extreme distortion, or for minimalists wanting the simplest controls.

What other players say

Customer reviews consistently highlight the Tumnus Deluxe V2's versatility, tonal quality, and robust construction. Many report that its active three-band EQ and hot mode provide more flexibility and gain range than typical Klon-style pedals. The pedal excels at both clean boosts and richer overdrive, stacking well with others and adapting to different setups. While praised for its sonic options and premium build, some users note issues with transparency, noise in hot mode, and buffer switch accessibility. Overall, satisfaction is high, especially among those seeking a highly adaptable, Klon-inspired drive.

The sound sounds like the other thing it's supposed to sound like. Identical. And you have more EQ options. Small, perfectly formed. Feels solid in the hand.
As a boost, you don't need much more, unless by amp, pickups, or taste you want more options.
Mine came with an empty battery though (worked for only a few minutes before dying). I'll subtract some points for this.

Before you decide

Questions players ask

Does the Tumnus Deluxe V2 work well with both single-coil and humbucker pickups?

Yes, users report excellent results with both types, achieving full, warm, and articulate tones across many guitar and amp combinations.

Can this pedal serve as a transparent clean boost?

It works well as a clean boost, but its sound character adds some midrange and harmonic content typical of its circuit, rather than being totally transparent.

Is it suitable for stacking with other overdrive or distortion pedals?

Absolutely, many owners find it excels at stacking, especially with Tube Screamer-style and 'Rat' pedals, offering enhanced tonal shaping and added clarity.

How easy is it to adjust the EQ, and are the controls sensitive?

The active bass, mids, and treble controls offer a wide range but require a gentle touch; settings can become extreme quickly, so fine-tuning is recommended.

What are the disadvantages of the buffer/true bypass switch location?

The switch is placed on the side, which can be hard to access if the pedal is tightly packed on a board, making on-the-fly adjustments less convenient.

The last word from the bench

The Wampler Tumnus Deluxe Overdrive V2 provides superb versatility with its responsive 3-band equalization and switchable buffer options. It delivers everything from clean boost to harmonically rich overdrive, retaining clarity and character across different amps and guitars. While it comes at a premium compared to smaller alternatives, its tonal shaping and robust construction justify the investment for demanding players. Despite a few quirks with switch placement and hot mode noise, it remains a top-tier choice for versatile overdrive needs.
