Harley Benton TE-90FLT LH VW Deluxe Series review

The Harley Benton TE-90FLT LH VW Deluxe Series is a left-handed, T-style electric guitar with a distinctive combination of familiar body lines and Filter'Tron-style pickups. At a listed price of $187, it offers a chambered ash body, a maple neck and fingerboard, and two Roswell FLT-NI Alnico 2 humbuckers. The reversed headstock gives it an unconventional look, while the Vintage White finish is often described by owners as warmer and more cream-toned than a stark white.

Its specifications are straightforward: six strings, 22 frets, a 648 mm scale, and a 42 mm nut width. The maple fingerboard has a 350 mm radius. The neck is bolted to the body, and the guitar has no tremolo. Harley Benton lists the body as weight-reduced and chambered, but owner reports on weight differ. Several players call it light or comfortable, while at least one found their example surprisingly heavy. The chambering should not be taken as a guarantee of a particular weight.

Build, finish, and setup

Many owners report a clean finish, neatly installed hardware, and a guitar that is playable soon after unboxing. Some say their instrument arrived well set up, with good intonation and comfortable action. Others needed to adjust the truss rod, bridge, or nut, and some report sharp fret ends, uneven frets, or a high nut. Those differences matter: a well-adjusted example can feel ready to play, but setup quality is not consistent across every review.

There are also isolated reports of cosmetic or assembly problems, including a misaligned pickup, a poorly fitted pickguard, loose controls, and a loose output jack. These are not universal complaints, but they show why it is sensible to inspect the guitar on arrival. A small setup adjustment may be all that is needed; fretwork or routing issues are more substantial and should be assessed before deciding whether to keep the instrument.

The neck receives mixed reactions. Some players find it comfortable and fast, while others describe it as broad or too thick for their hands. That is a matter of preference, and trying the profile in person is ideal when possible. The reversed headstock also divides opinion. It is a visual feature, but several owners mention that the tuner layout takes some getting used to.

Roswell pickups and playing character

The two Roswell humbuckers are the guitar's defining sound feature. Players commonly describe them as fuller than conventional single-coil pickups, with a bright, clear attack that retains some of the snap associated with a T-style guitar. The neck pickup is often praised for warm, rounded clean tones. The bridge pickup can deliver a pronounced, cutting twang, with enough body to handle overdrive and rock sounds.

Owner impressions range from clean and articulate to punchy and aggressive, but the recurring point is versatility. Several reviewers enjoy the pickups both clean and driven, and some chose to keep them rather than replace them. That does not mean every player will prefer their output or response. For someone seeking classic single-coil thinness, these humbuckers may feel too thick; for a player after a brighter humbucker voice, their blend of weight and attack is a major reason to consider the model.

The controls are less consistently praised than the pickups. Some owners find the electronics effective, while others report a tone control that changes abruptly rather than gradually, or loose-feeling selector and control hardware. These observations apply to particular instruments, not necessarily the entire production run.

What to expect for the price

At $187, the TE-90FLT LH VW stands out as a left-handed guitar with an unusual pickup configuration and an ash body. Its strongest reported qualities are the distinctive tones, appealing appearance, and satisfying playing feel after a good setup. Some experienced players have used Harley Benton guitars on stage, and several describe this model as worth keeping without pickup changes.

The sensible caveat is quality control. Reports include excellent, ready-to-play examples as well as instruments needing fret, nut, or hardware attention. Buyers should check fret ends, string clearance, tuning stability, pickup alignment, and control operation. The listed strings are.010 to.046, and the guitar does not include a case or gig bag.

For left-handed players looking for a T-style guitar with bright, substantial humbucker tones, the Harley Benton TE-90FLT LH VW makes a compelling budget option. Its sound and distinctive design are the main attractions. Budget time for a careful inspection and possible setup work, and choose it for its particular character rather than expecting every example to arrive flawless.

Where it shines, where it stumbles

What convinced me

  • Distinctive, full-sounding Roswell humbuckers balance warm neck tones with a lively, bright bridge sound.
  • Comfortable, lightweight-feeling T-style body and playable maple neck, though individual examples can vary.
  • Strong value for a left-handed guitar with an ash body, chrome hardware, and an unusual reverse headstock.

What bugged me

  • Setup and quality control can be inconsistent: some buyers report sharp fret ends, high nut slots, or misaligned pickups.
  • Stock tuners and the tone control draw criticism, and the reverse headstock may take getting used to.

Is it the right one for you?

Good pick if

A strong match for left-handed players seeking an affordable T-style guitar with distinctive humbucker tones. Also suited to rock players and buyers comfortable checking or refining a guitar setup.

Look elsewhere if

Not ideal for buyers who require consistent, flawless out-of-box fretwork and setup. Also consider another model if you dislike a reverse headstock or prefer a slim neck.

Several owners say it works well for both clean and overdriven tones, and left-handed buyers value the availability of this design. The main reservations concern inconsistent setup and finishing, including sharp fret ends, nut or action adjustments, misaligned pickups, and uneven controls. Opinions on weight, neck shape, and tuner quality also differ.

the guitar feels and plays brilliantly, holds tune, and sounds huge!
Pickups have their own character with a lot of single-coilly chaim and snap to them, but also at the same time having paf-like humbucker characteristics.
The one terrible thing is the pickup routing, which is completely misaligned with the strings

Yes. It is specifically offered in a left-handed configuration, and buyers appreciate having an affordable T-style option with this pickup layout.

The two Roswell Alnico 2 humbuckers are often described as a blend of single-coil-like clarity and humbucker fullness. The neck pickup is warm, while the bridge pickup has a pronounced, bright attack.

Will it be ready to play straight out of the box?

Some buyers report a playable factory setup, but others needed to adjust the action, nut, neck, or frets. Check the instrument carefully when it arrives.

Are the tuners and controls reliable?

Experiences vary. Some owners found the tuners stable, while others considered them imprecise. Several also reported a poorly graduated tone control or loose controls.

Is it suitable for rock and heavier styles?

Buyer reports praise its strong overdriven sound and assertive bridge pickup, making it a good fit for rock. Its clear clean tones also support a wider range of playing.

The last word from the bench

Its two Roswell humbuckers are the standout feature, delivering warm neck tones and a sharper, more forceful bridge voice that buyers praise for clean and overdriven playing. The chambered ash body and maple neck give it a distinctive look, although reports differ on the guitar's weight and the neck profile may not suit everyone. Some instruments arrive ready to play, while others need fret, nut, or control adjustments. At this price, it is a compelling choice if you value its sound and design and are willing to inspect the setup.
