Introduction: Iconic Reissue with Premium Materials

The Gibson Les Paul 1968 Custom Reissue EB from the Custom Shop reinterprets a classic with uncompromising attention to core specs. Priced at $5,599, this black-finished solid-body electric is aimed at collectors and demanding players alike. The guitar features a solid mahogany body with a carved maple top, set mahogany neck with a long tenon, and an ebony fretboard set with pearloid block inlays. Every detail, from the Split Diamond headstock inlay to gold-plated hardware, nods to the 1968 classic while incorporating Custom Shop construction practices.

Construction and Finish: Classic Black, Vintage Features

Physically, this Les Paul 68 Custom Reissue EB delivers what the label promises. The body pairs a substantial slab of mahogany with an arched maple top. The neck is carved from mahogany and joined via the long tenon method, which enhances resonance and ensures stability. Players highlight the guitar's balanced weight (reportedly around 4.2kg or 9.25 lbs), making it comfortable for long sessions, and the multi-layer binding exudes a distinct vintage luxury, though some users have noted occasional inconsistencies in the finish where the binding meets the neck. The subtle aging on the binding complements the classic Ebony color, creating a visual blend of modern craftsmanship and period-correct styling.

The fretboard uses select ebony, offering a fast, smooth feel under the fingers and adding brightness to the instrument's tonal profile. The 22 frets are set impeccably, though some users have mentioned they run on the smaller side, which aids precision but may not appeal to every technique.

Hardware Details

  • No-wire ABR-1 bridge and aluminum stop bar, ensuring lightweight sustain and fast response
  • Kluson Waffle Back machine heads for stable tuning, even under aggressive playing
  • Gold-plated hardware for a premium look
  • CTS potentiometers (2 volume, 2 tone) and a 3-way toggle switch for classic Les Paul control layout
  • Gibson-branded case and certificate included; however, several users reported the included case is somewhat rigid and can be cumbersome to use

Playability: Modern Precision, Classic Feel

The set-in mahogany neck carries a '68 medium C profile. According to field feedback, the profile hits a sweet spot, not too slim, not too chunky, which should suit classic and modern players. The fretboard's radius and the small frets contribute to rapid, articulate runs while facilitating a low action setup. Some guitars out of the box were reportedly set up with excessively low action, which resulted in buzzing, but this is easily adjusted by a competent technician.

The smooth ebony acts as a perfect highway for fast lead work and big bends, while the long scale (24.75 inches or 628 mm) balances string tension for chord work and soloing. Overall, this model covers a wide array of genres, from rock and blues to heavier modern tones.

Sound: Dynamic, Punchy, Distinctively Bright

Key to the Les Paul 68 Custom Reissue EB's sonic identity are the dual 1968 Custombucker humbuckers, built to vintage output specifications. Users consistently praise the pickups' ability to deliver punchy mids and articulate highs, a character attributed to the combination of maple top and ebony fingerboard. Compared to a 1957 reissue, players note this model is noticeably brighter and snappier, an asset for lead clarity and definition in a mix. Bass remains tight and controlled, never overpowering the signal, rounding out a well-balanced tonal spectrum.

With the control layout, two separate volume and tone knobs, plus the three-way selector, the guitar moves easily from crystalline cleans to saturated rock overdrive. The electronics respond well to subtle changes, allowing accurate tailoring of your sound. Users emphasize the remarkable clarity even with overdriven amps and praise how well the potentiometers clean up a high-gain tone when rolled back.

Quality Control and Extras

While the majority of owners rave about the instrument's look and sound, some have noted minor cosmetic flaws: imperfect finish along binding edges, light dents, and visible buffing wheel marks, especially on the back. There are isolated complaints about dry fretboards and an out-of-the-box setup that needed further adjustment, which for the price range should be more consistent. The lack of included strap or multitool is unexpected, given the higher-tier positioning. Still, the global assessment marks the guitar as visually stunning, with excellent structural integrity and top-tier, gig-ready performance once set up.

Conclusion: Expensive, But Delivers the Custom Shop Experience

The Gibson Les Paul 68 Custom Reissue EB stands as a showpiece and an intensive player's instrument, its Custom Shop build quality, select woods, and dynamic Custombucker pickups translating the iconic late-'60s voice into a modern context. Though finishing QC can be uneven and the case less than ideal, the core of this guitar, sound, playability, and vintage-correct visuals, delivers on both nostalgia and professional demands. For those after a premium Les Paul with a distinctive tonal edge and undeniable stage presence, it justifies its asking price for serious traditionalists and players seeking a faithful '68 experience.

What other players say

Customers consistently praise the 68 Custom Reissue's dynamic pickups, comfortable neck profile, and versatile sound, describing it as both responsive and resonant. Complaints mainly focus on inconsistent finish quality, setup issues out of the box, and a case that feels subpar for the price. Despite these, the instrument's tonal quality, visual impact, and playability win over most buyers, who view it as a true premium product worth its cost for dedicated players.

Excellent 68 VOS, light and resonant as desired. 68 custombuckers are very punchy, guitar is very snappy thanks to its maple cap and ebony fretboard.
Its quality, its sound, its beauty, everything is so perfect, that I could not imagine it could ever be better... Not cheap, but such a high end instrument, honestly, worths every cent of its price!
For this kind of money you would expect a perfect instrument. Mine arrived with horns slightly chipped. So disappointing. On the box was the retailer's QC sticker.

Questions players ask

Is the neck profile comfortable for small or large hands?

The 1968 medium C neck profile is designed to be balanced, making it comfortable for a wide range of hand sizes, neither too slim nor too thick.

Does the guitar come properly set up out of the case?

Several owners reported needing minor setup adjustments, such as neck relief or action, upon arrival, though basic playability is usually solid.

How does the tone compare to other Les Paul models?

It is brighter and snappier than earlier reissues (like the 1957), largely due to the arched maple top and ebony fingerboard, while still retaining classic Les Paul warmth.

Is the case included of high quality?

The included case is protective but has been criticized for being overly stiff, difficult to keep open, and less refined than expected for a premium instrument.

Are there common quality control issues?

Some buyers noted finish and setup imperfections (small chips, buffing marks, dry fretboards), which can occur even on Custom Shop models; others received flawless instruments.

The last word from the bench

The Gibson Les Paul 68 Custom Reissue EB offers outstanding resonance, sustain, and tonal flexibility, making it ideal for demanding players. Its Custombucker pickups and quality materials deliver an unmistakable sonic character. However, buyers should be aware of varying finish quality and a higher-than-average price. Overall, it's a dream instrument with a distinct vintage spirit that rewards those seeking an authentic experience.
