Understanding Scale Length: 24.75 vs 25.5 Inches and Why It Matters

Understanding Scale Length

Scale length is one of those specs people skip over on the way to the pickups, and it changes how a guitar feels more than the pickups do. Two guitars with the same neck shape and the same strings can feel completely different in the hand because one is three-quarters of an inch longer between the nut and the bridge. Once a student understands this, a lot of their preferences suddenly make sense.

What scale length is

Scale length is the vibrating length of the open string, measured from the nut to the bridge saddle. In practice you measure from the nut to the center of the 12th fret and double it, because the saddles are set back a hair for intonation. The two common electric scales are 24.75 inches and 25.5 inches. A handful of guitars use 25 inches, and shorter and longer scales exist for specific jobs.

Tension and feel

A string tuned to a given pitch is under more tension on a longer scale. On a 25.5-inch guitar, a set of 10s pulls about 10 percent harder than the same set on a 24.75-inch guitar. That is why 24.75 feels slinkier, bends feel easier, and chords feel softer under the fingers. It is also why players on 24.75 often prefer 10s while players on 25.5 are comfortable with 9s.

The frets are spaced closer together on the shorter scale too. It is a small difference, about a sixteenth of an inch at the low frets, but stretches in the first position are noticeably easier for smaller hands.

Tone

Higher tension gives a string a clearer fundamental and more pronounced harmonics. The longer scale sounds brighter, snappier, and tighter in the low end. The shorter scale sounds warmer and a bit thicker, with a rounder attack. Neither is better; they are simply the two flavors that most of rock, blues and country has been built on. Tuning stability and low tunings

Longer scale holds pitch better when you dig in, because the higher tension resists the sharpening you get from a hard pick attack. This matters most in low tunings. Take a 24.75-inch guitar down to drop C with 10s and the low string flops and goes sharp when you hit it. The same tuning on a 25.5-inch guitar with the same strings is firmer. Short-scale guitars

Scales of 24 inches and below show up on guitars aimed at smaller players, students, and travel use, and on a few offset designs that adults love. They feel very easy to play, and with 10s or 11s they sound fine. With 9s they can feel rubbery and intonate poorly. If you buy a short-scale guitar, go up a gauge and you will be happy.

Baritones

A baritone has a scale of 27 to 30 inches, built to be tuned a fourth or a fifth lower than standard, B to B or A to A. The extra length keeps heavy strings at normal tension so low notes stay clear instead of turning to mush. They are wonderful for heavy music and for certain kinds of atmospheric playing, and they are a specialized tool. Do not buy one as a first guitar.

Multi-scale, briefly

Some guitars use a fanned fret layout with a longer scale on the bass side and a shorter scale on the treble side. The idea is tight low strings and easy high strings on the same neck. It looks strange and feels normal within about ten minutes. You mostly see it on seven and eight-string instruments.

Choosing

If your hands are small, you bend a lot, or you like a warm sound, lean toward 24.75. If you play with a hard attack, use lower tunings, want brightness, or just like a firmer feel, lean toward 25.5. Better still, play one of each with the same string gauge and pay attention to your fretting hand. Most players know which one they prefer within a couple of minutes, and they often find that it explains every guitar they have ever loved.
