Overview: Electro Harmonix Pitch Fork+ Pitch Shifter

The Electro Harmonix Pitch Fork+ Pitch Shifter, released in late 2020, is the brand's most advanced pitch shifter pedal to date. It builds on the foundation of the original Pitch Fork by introducing a second independent pitch shifting engine, deep programmability, and multiple new routing options, all in a housing not much larger than the classic Micro POG. At a price point of $188, Electro Harmonix aims this at players seeking maximum versatility from octave and harmony effects with pro-grade control in a pedalboard-friendly size.

Key Features and Controls

  • Two independent pitch shifters (each spanning three octaves up or down, for a total range from -3 to +3 octaves)
  • Detune control: Each pitch engine can be offset by up to 99 cents, allowing for fine-tuned chorus and flange effects or micro-interval harmonization
  • Eight effect modes including X-MOD, which enables frequency and ring modulation sounds outside standard pitch shifts
  • 100 programmable preset slots (plus 10 factory presets), with fast recall from a dedicated footswitch or external controller
  • Extensive I/O: Main and auxiliary outputs, expression pedal input, and external controller input, all on standard 1/4-inch stereo jacks
  • Buffered bypass, programmable user footswitch, and momentary or latch switching
  • Dry and shifted output volume controls, with full blend and separate routing per preset
  • 9V DC power supply (included)

First Impressions: Construction and Ease of Use

Physically, the Pitch Fork+ Pitch Shifter feels solid, typical of Electro Harmonix's robust metal enclosures. The unit's main controls (Dry, Shift 1, Shift 2, Value/Enter/Save) and array of push buttons are well laid out. The matte-finish knobs offer enough resistance for delicate settings, though several users report the selector knob feels slightly fragile. The four-digit display is clear and remains easily visible on stage. The pedal is not oversized despite the feature set (102 x 121 x 57 mm), which allows integration on crowded pedalboards without compromise.

Learning the basic sound selection is straightforward, but programming deeper functions, assigning the expression pedal, configuring dual pitch routing or navigating submenus, can require a close reading of the manual. Those looking for one-touch operation can simply turn on the pedal and get pitch shifting; power users have layers of tweakable features to unlock with patience.

Audio Performance: Tone, Tracking, and Musical Use

Electro Harmonix maintains fast, accurate pitch tracking, a hallmark of the original Pitch Fork. Chords, single notes, and rapid passages all track reliably for both guitar and bass, down to the low B or lower. The detune functions and X-MOD deliver chorus, flanging, Hammond organ-inspired textures, and true ring mod/frequency modulated sounds available in real time or via presets.

For octave-up, octave-down, fifth up (reverse capo), drop tuning, and pitch bends, the Pitch Fork+ covers all scenarios previously handled by models like Whammy, Drop, or Micro POG, with the added benefit of running two shift engines at once. Dual outputs let users split the direct and shifted tones, feeding bass and guitar amps separately or creating wet/dry blends for complex live rigs.

In practice, users report the pedal excels at natural-sounding octaves and contemporary harmony effects. However, at the far ends of the range (especially +2 or +3 octaves), digital artifacts do begin to emerge. High register shifts can become thin or unnatural, especially on complex material. Some veteran Pitch Fork users feel the original has a slightly "sweeter" or less sterile tone at extreme settings. Still, for most musical uses (and compared with most other pitch shifters at similar or higher price points), the sound quality holds up well, both in solo and band contexts.

Latency is nearly imperceptible on standard shifts. Some users detect slight delay or "synthetic" feel when moving far from center pitch, but for octave work and mild harmonization the tracking remains convincing.

Strengths and Limitations

  • Programmability: With 100 user slots and detailed parameter control, the Pitch Fork+ is unrivaled in flexibility in its class. Program recall is quick via the onboard switch or external controller.
  • Expressiveness: The expression pedal input can be assigned to any parameter, pitch, dry/effect volume, or filter sweeps, so live manipulation is powerful and responsive. The programmable user switch adds additional performance options.
  • Versatility: Besides pitch shifting, the pedal covers detune, doubling, chorus, and ring modulation, essentially bridging the functionality of several classic pedals in one.
  • Construction: Sturdy chassis and quality switches, though some users note softer-feeling push buttons or selector knob that may warrant gentle handling over years of use.
  • Weaknesses: The pedal generates some digital noise, especially if dry/effect volumes are set high. At idle, in complex pedalboards, or upstream of delays/reverbs, the residual noise may be problematic for noise-sensitive studio setups. The pitch shifting character, while musical, does not always convincingly match analog octave tones or the purest examples of the old POG circuit, especially for those seeking classic warmth at extreme intervals.

Who Is It For?

The Pitch Fork+ Pitch Shifter is a top-tier choice for guitarists, bassists, and multi-instrumentalists who demand deep pitch manipulation on stage and in the studio. It shines where instant preset recall, chord tracking, and split outputs are required. For creative musicians working in genres from pop to ambient, or for bands seeking to fill out sound with octave layering or pseudo-synth textures, it's a major step forward. If you exclusively need basic octave up/down with pristine vintage warmth or dead-silent operation, it's worth testing the unit for your specific rig before making the leap.

Conclusion

Electro Harmonix's Pitch Fork+ Pitch Shifter stands as one of the most powerful, flexible, and professional pitch effects available at its price. While its extreme digital ranges and minor noise floor may not eclipse the original Pitch Fork or the most analog-sounding options, its versatility and control features leave more limited pitch shifters behind. For advanced users and live performers, the Pitch Fork+ justifies its flagship status with feature density and practical reliability.

Is it the right one for you?

Good pick if

Ideal for multi-instrumentalists, experimental guitarists and bassists, and players who need deep pitch shifting flexibility, programmable presets, and expression/external control in one unit. Musicians who want to process multiple sources or incorporate synth, organ, chorus, or creative routing will find this pedal especially valuable.

Look elsewhere if

Not suited for users seeking a plug-and-play, noise-free basic pitch shifter with an ultra-organic tone, or those unable or unwilling to navigate menu-driven setup. If true bypass or pristine, transparent operation is a must, look elsewhere.

What other players say

Customer feedback highlights the Pitch Fork+ as a uniquely versatile pitch shifting tool with outstanding programmable options and flexibility suitable for both creative and advanced musical setups. Most users praise its tracking, build, and feature set, finding it valuable for guitar, bass, and even violin. However, some are put off by noise in the signal path, the digital sound character at higher shifts, and a steeper learning curve for making full use of the settings and presets. Those focusing solely on simple pitch shifting or expecting true bypass might consider alternatives, while power users view it as an essential addition to their board.

Expression pedal, auxiliary pedal, twin outs, preset banks, large readable led screen and deep programmability makes this pedal unbeatable if pitch shifting at your feet is what you need.
Notez que cette pédale fera du bruit dés que vous lui demanderez de faire du gain en montant trop tous les potards, sous forme de perte de naturel, d’artefacts.
Unfortunately it sounds really bad to my ears for my use case. There is a distinctly metalic sound to it that is hard to ignore. Another huge issue is the unit introduces a lot of noise into the signal even just sitting there switched off.

Before you decide

Questions players ask

Does the Pitch Fork+ introduce noise into the signal path?

Yes, several users noted background hiss or noise, especially when boosting effect levels or in higher-gain setups. The unit is buffered bypass rather than true bypass.

Is the pedal complicated to set up or program?

The wide range of features and deep editing require some time to master. The interface involves menus and submenus, so initial setup can be confusing for some users.

How does the tracking perform, especially with chords?

Tracking is considered state-of-the-art, performing cleanly even with chords on guitar or bass. Extreme shift settings may introduce more digital artifacts.

Is the construction durable for gigging?

The pedal's chassis and switches are generally solid. However, some noted the selector knob and navigation buttons feel less robust than the rest of the build.

Does it sound like the earlier Pitch Fork pedal?

While similar, some users prefer the original Pitch Fork's tone at extreme settings, finding it less digital and more organic.

The last word from the bench

Electro Harmonix's Pitch Fork+ delivers outstanding versatility and expansive pitch manipulation in a relatively compact unit. Its programmable functions, dual shifting engines, and flexible routing make it a leading choice for advanced users willing to explore. Some noise issues and the digital edge at extreme shifts may be dealbreakers for purists, and the interface can feel daunting at first. For those seeking maximum power and flexibility from a pitch shifter, this pedal more than delivers.
