Overview: Traveler Guitar Traveler Pro Series Maple AB

The Traveler Guitar Traveler Pro Series Maple AB is designed for musicians who value compactness and substantial versatility in a single instrument. Released in December 2018 and priced at $389, this guitar merges electric and acoustic capabilities in an ultra-light, travel-friendly body. At only 1.7 kg and just over 28 inches in length, it fits easily in overhead compartments or smaller car trunks. Yet, despite its travel credentials, it aims to deliver on feel, playability, and sound often missed by other portable instruments.

Build and Hardware

This model is crafted from North American maple for both the body and the neck, providing strong sustain and a lively midrange. The through-body neck construction contributes to impressive energy transfer and stability across the instrument's 22 medium nickel silver frets and 24.72-inch (628 mm) scale length. The black walnut fingerboard feels smooth under the fingers, with a nut width of 44.4 mm approximating familiar acoustic comfort.

  • Body/Neck: North American maple, neck-through
  • Fingerboard: Black walnut
  • Frets: 22 medium nickel silver
  • Scale length: 24.72 inches (628 mm)
  • Nut width: 44.4 mm
  • Finish: Antique Brown Satin
  • Weight: 1.7 kg (3.75 lb)

Chrome hardware gives a clean, modern look while closed-gear tuners (14:1 ratio) hold tuning reliably through extended sessions or travel bumps. Overall craftsmanship impresses: fret ends are well finished, joints clean, and the satin finish resists fingerprints while subtly exhibiting the figured maple grain.

Portability and Ergonomics

The compact form has a direct impact on playability. The neck, body profile, and 44.4 mm nut width give it a feel close to a full-size acoustic. Despite its shrunken footprint, string spacing and action are well judged out of the box. Some players find the lack of a traditional body top initially off-putting, especially for fingerstyle, since there is nowhere to rest the forearm. It quickly feels natural when played with a pick, either standing with a strap or seated. The unique design puts tuning pegs beneath the playing hand, which may require a short adaptation period.

Electronics and Controls

The electronics setup is carefully thought out for maximum flexibility:

  • Pickups: Single coil bridge pickup with AlNiCo magnet, Traveler Piezo system under the saddle
  • Controls: Three-way selector switch, two volume knobs (one for each pickup), one blend fader
  • Outputs: Standard 6.3 mm mono jack, included stethoscope output for ultra-quiet practice

The three-way switch and independent level controls allow fast transitions between electric (single coil), acoustic (piezo), or blended sounds. The sound through an amplifier impresses for a travel guitar: the piezo offers bright, cutting attack with some bite, a good fit for clean rhythm, though with an accentuated treble. Most users prefer to roll back the highs or use a tone-shaping pedal or amp. The single coil brings midrange warmth and edge, lending itself to typical blues, pop, or rock playing. Used together, a surprisingly rich, hybrid timbre emerges. Electronics are passive, so there's no concern about battery life on the road.

The stethoscope output, a piezo connected to a supplied stethoscope headset, feels more of a novelty. While it allows silent practice in hotel rooms or flights, most players report limited use due to discomfort and low sound fidelity compared to plugging headphones via a small portable amp.

Acoustic Experience and Tonal Character

Physically unplugged, the Traveler Pro Series Maple AB emits a soft, clear sound, perfectly fine for working chord shapes, runs, or light practice without drawing attention in a shared space. It's not designed to project like a true acoustic, but within arm's reach, articulation is surprisingly detailed. When amplified, the guitar supports both expressive acoustic-style fingerpicking and more aggressive strumming, though players looking for deep-bodied resonance won't find miracles. Playability is a highlight; string tension and action (factory-set with D'Addario EJ15s,.010 gauge) are slinky and forgiving, making long sessions easy on the fingers.

The overall experience is defined by practicality. Musicians praise its no-fuss readiness and adaptability: plug into a standard amp, modeler, or straight into headphones through a mini-amp, and the Traveler reacts well, both pickups respond to effects, making it possible to fit in various rehearsal or performance scenarios.

Use Cases and Real-world Impressions

  • Perfect carry-on for air travel, even on budget airlines.
  • Fits comfortably in small spaces like tour vans or shared apartments.
  • Lightweight (1.7 kg) relieves fatigue, ideal for long sets or home practice.
  • Surprisingly effective for rehearsal, bedroom jamming, and even stage work (with EQ).
  • Players praise smooth fretting, forgiving strings, and solid build for the price.
  • The lack of body takes some adaptation, mainly arm positioning.
  • Some wish for even more robust jack connections, yet reliability is generally excellent.

Conclusion

The Traveler Guitar Traveler Pro Series Maple AB stands out as a genuinely usable hybrid for those needing quality, reliability, and flexibility in a portable package. Its clear, usable amplified sound and easy playability offset the modest unplugged volume and unconventional feel. As a primary travel instrument, backup for gigging, or silent home practice tool, it proves far more than a curiosity: the design and execution bring real pride of ownership and broad utility for today's mobile player.

Is it the right one for you?

Good pick if

Ideal for frequent travelers, gigging musicians with strict size or weight restrictions, and those seeking a versatile practice instrument for both electric and acoustic sounds. Also suits players needing a portable guitar for on-the-go songwriting or hotel room practice.

Look elsewhere if

Not for traditionalists who need a full acoustic body for resonance or players sensitive to unconventional ergonomics. Also not recommended for those who require a high-output, large-bodied instrument or strictly one playing style.

The instrument is really compact, lightweight and very easy to transport. The neck and strings are close to a folk guitar. Action is good.
I was pleasantly surprised, it is easy to play and with a good multi-effect you can manage the sound well between the two pickups.
Sound is very very correct for the price, lightweight and tiny. I would not want any other guitar now.
