PRS JM Silver Sky RW Mojave Brown: A Technical Review of Mayer's Signature Model
Design and Construction
The PRS JM Silver Sky RW Mojave Brown, released in March 2026, is the result of the ongoing collaboration between PRS and John Mayer. Staying true to the style of the classic double-cutaway solid body seen on many ST-style instruments, this guitar combines traditional design sensibilities with characteristic PRS refinement. The body is crafted from American alder, a choice that aims to provide a balanced tonal foundation, with prominent midrange clarity and smooth sustain.
The neck is constructed from maple, a staple in high-end electric guitar necks for its stability and pronounced attack. It is attached to the body using a bolt-on system, enhancing note definition and facilitating easier maintenance or replacement. The fingerboard is made of rosewood, offering a warm tonal profile and a soft tactile feel. Distinctive PRS small bird inlays on the rosewood fingerboard provide recognizable PRS aesthetics.
- Body material: American alder
- Neck material: Maple, bolt-on assembly
- Fingerboard: Rosewood, 22 frets, 42.1 mm bone nut
- PRS small bird inlays
Dimensions and Playability
With a scale length of 648 mm (25.5 inches), this model matches the familiar proportions of classic ST-style guitars, favored for their balance between tension and playability. The 184 mm (7.25 inches) fingerboard radius signifies a traditional, rounded feel under the fretting hand. It is tailored for smooth chord transitions and comfortable rhythm playing rather than ultra-low action or aggressive string bending.
The neck profile, designated as the 635 JM-R, is carved to Mayer's specifications, measuring 22 mm thick at the first fret and 24 mm at the twelfth. This profile promotes a substantial, yet approachable feel that sits between vintage and modern ergonomics.
- Scale length: 648 mm (25.5 inches)
- Fingerboard radius: 184 mm (7.25 inches)
- Neck thickness: 22 mm (1st fret), 24 mm (12th fret)
- Nut width: 42.1 mm (1.656 inches), bone material
Hardware and Electronics
The Silver Sky RW Mojave Brown is loaded with three 635JM single coil pickups, developed in partnership with Mayer to reproduce many classic tones associated with single coil designs. Wired to a five-way blade switch, they allow for a broad palette of vintage-inspired sounds, from sparkling rhythm to singing leads. The electronics include a master volume and two separate tone controls for nuanced shaping.
Hardware is finished in nickel, and the guitar boasts a PRS steel tremolo bridge with vintage specifications. This unit is designed to maintain reliable tuning stability while offering expressive vibrato, thanks to its traditional pivot system and included vintage-style locking machine heads. The choice of a white pickguard adds visual contrast against the Mojave Brown Satin finish.
- Pickups: Three 635JM single coil pickups
- Electronics: Master volume, two tone knobs, five-way switch
- Tremolo: PRS vintage-style steel bridge
- Machine heads: Vintage-style locking
- Finish: Mojave Brown Satin, nickel hardware, white pickguard
Included Accessories and Origin
The guitar comes supplied with a high-quality padded gig bag but does not include a hard case. It is manufactured in the United States, which should offer a strong indication of craftsmanship consistency and material quality typical of PRS's domestic production.
