Mooer GTRS Guitars Standard 801 SG

The Mooer GTRS Guitars Standard 801 SG pairs a playable HSS electric guitar with a substantial set of built-in modeling and practice tools. Its strongest caveat is the mixed experience with the companion app.

Mooer GTRS Guitars Standard 801 SG review

The Mooer GTRS Guitars Standard 801 SG brings a familiar ST-style electric guitar together with digital sound tools built into the instrument. At $309, its Surf Green finish, HSS pickup layout, onboard modeling, and app-based effects make it an unusually versatile option for practice and casual performance. The core appeal is practical: connect headphones, use the built-in sounds, and work on an idea without assembling a separate pedalboard and amplifier setup.

It has a basswood body, a one-piece bolt-on roasted maple neck, and a maple fingerboard. The 22 jumbo frets, 12-inch fingerboard radius, and 42 mm nut width give it conventional modern electric-guitar proportions. Its 647.7 mm (25.5-inch) scale and two-point tremolo will feel familiar to players accustomed to ST-style instruments. A mint pickguard, chrome hardware, sealed tuning machines, and a matte neck finish complete the straightforward look. The supplied gig bag, tremolo arm, hex key, and USB-C cable are useful inclusions.

Playing feel and pickup range

One owner found the neck somewhat dry at first, making clean slides difficult, but reported that it felt comfortable after applying string lubricant and getting used to the finish. That is a subjective observation rather than a general defect, though it suggests that players sensitive to neck feel may want to try the guitar in person. The instrument arrived in good condition for another owner, who also praised its build quality and described its tone as convincingly Strat-like.

The pickup configuration uses two Alnico V single coils, in the neck and middle positions, plus an Alnico V humbucker at the bridge. A five-way switch selects the pickup combinations, while conventional volume and tone controls handle basic adjustments. Players looking specifically for a bridge single coil will not find one here. Feedback on the range is positive: owners enjoyed the clean, blues, rock, and higher-gain sounds available from the pickup layout. The guitar also works as a conventional electric when its digital features are not in use.

Modeling and app features

The GTRS Intelligent Process System adds 11 guitar simulations and 126 effects, with four presets available through the Super Knob. The free GTRS app is the editor and control center, with a drum machine, metronome, tuner, and an 80-second looper. Several owners particularly valued the looper for developing musical ideas and the drum machine for practice. The broad selection of sounds can also reduce the amount of separate gear needed for home sessions or informal playing.

App reliability and editing are the main reservations in owner reports. Some users found it easy to connect and select or save sounds, while one reported trouble editing effects and changing effect settings such as reverb. Another noted that the app needed improvement, including the ability to rearrange tone positions. Reports differ, and app version or setup may affect the experience, but buyers should not assume every editing function will feel intuitive. Mooer customer support also drew criticism from one owner who received no response to a question.

Connections and everyday use

The guitar supports Bluetooth 5.0 and direct USB OTG recording to a compatible phone or tablet through its USB-C output. The 6.3 mm jack can also be used with headphones for silent practice. Its integrated lithium-ion battery is rated for up to 10 hours of use per charge and 15 hours on standby. Owners describe headphone practice and wireless connections to a phone or tablet as convenient, especially when playing at home or working on presets without extra equipment.

A GWF4 Wireless Footswitch can control the system, but it is sold separately. Owners who use the guitar's presets and effects regularly consider the pedal a worthwhile addition, since it makes control easier while playing. The guitar also has no built-in MIDI pickup or piezo system, so its digital features center on Mooer's own modeling and effects rather than those options.

Verdict

The Mooer GTRS Guitars Standard 801 SG is a capable, approachable electric guitar with a useful set of integrated practice and recording tools. Its traditional HSS layout keeps it versatile even when the modeling system is off, while the looper, drum machine, headphone output, and USB recording expand what it can do at home. The chief caveat is the app: reports range from smooth operation to frustrating limits on editing. At this price, it offers strong value for players who want a playable guitar and a compact digital toolkit, provided they are comfortable with an app-dependent feature set.

Is it the right one for you?

Good pick if

A good fit for players seeking a versatile practice and home-recording guitar, beginners who want built-in sounds and tools, and players who value a broad range of tones without assembling a large rig.

Look elsewhere if

Less suitable for buyers who expect a polished, consistently simple app experience or need highly dependable hands-free wireless control without buying an extra footswitch. Players concerned about the reported string breakage may prefer to inspect the setup carefully.

Even without presets its a very good guitar with a good price.
The inclusion of a looper and drum machine is fantastic for practicing.
Worked great straight out of the box and the foot pedal is a must in my opinion.

Questions players ask

Can I use it as a regular electric guitar without the modeling features?

Yes. A reviewer described it as a good guitar even without presets, and the instrument has a conventional HSS pickup layout, volume and tone controls, and a five-way pickup selector.

What practice tools are built in?

The GTRS app provides a drum machine, metronome, tuner, and 80-second looper. The guitar also supports headphone practice through its 6.3 mm jack.

Do I need to buy anything else to use the app features?

The GTRS app is included as free software, and a USB-C cable is supplied. The GWF4 wireless footswitch is optional and sold separately.

Can I record directly to a phone or tablet?

Yes. The guitar supports USB OTG recording through its USB-C output. Bluetooth 5.0 is also included.

Are there any reported concerns before buying?

Some reviewers found the app hard to navigate or reported difficulty editing effects. One owner also reported frequent string breakage, so checking setup and strings after purchase may be prudent.

The last word from the bench

This is a compelling choice for players who want varied tones, practice features, and direct mobile recording in one guitar at a moderate price. Reviewers generally liked its sound and playability, while reports about app usability show that the digital features may take patience. The reported string-breakage issue is worth keeping in mind, though the reviews do not establish how common it is. Consider the separately sold wireless footswitch if you want hands-free control.
