Good pick if

Ideal for professional musicians, studio engineers, and live performers needing a wide palette of amp tones, rapid set changes, and seamless integration with digital recording setups. Equally suited for players looking to travel light without sacrificing tone quality.

Look elsewhere if

Not recommended for those wanting a plug-and-play, minimal-control amp or purists seeking the exact physical response and punch of high-gain tube amplifiers. Beginners may find the interface initially complex.

Very easy to get a great sound. A bit confusing with so many buttons at first, but you get it over time.
The controller is excellent and, I would say, necessary.
Compared to taking the amp head I used before, my back is extremely grateful and the sound is impeccable.

Kemper Profiler PowerRack+ Remote MK2: Hands-on Test and Technical Evaluation

The Kemper Profiler PowerRack+ Remote MK2 enters the market as the latest flagship modeler, combining amp profiling, integrated effects and extensive connectivity in a 19 inch 3U rackmount design. Designed for demanding live and studio use, this unit offers a high-powered solution for guitarists and bassists seeking the flexibility of digital tone shaping and real amplifier feel, with all the benefits of a fully integrated remote foot controller. Priced at 2188, it sits in the pro segment of rack processors.

Build and Controls: Refined Ergonomics, Modern Features

The PowerRack+ MK2 measures 483 x 220 x 139 millimeters, making it standard rack size for live rigs or studio furniture. The included remote foot controller integrates securely, essential for hands-free navigation on stage. The entire casing feels solid and well-built, with clearly labeled push-buttons for input, effects blocks, amp control, and system setup. Rotary selectors manage global functions like tuner, browsing, and profiling.

  • Weight: Kemper cut down on weight for this version, a crucial improvement for touring musicians (many users highlight this detail as a key upgrade).
  • Controls: Dedicated gates, modulation, delay, and reverb parameters, together with deep rig customization, mirror analog amp workflows while offering immediate digital versatility.
  • Display: The front-panel screen is sharply backlit and readable, with much faster boot and response times compared to previous versions.

Sonic Performance: Detailed Profiling, Flexible Sound-Shaping

The Profiler function is Kemper's trademark: accurately capturing the nuances of real tube amps, cabs, and pedal chains, rather than using generic amp simulations. Feedback from veteran users consistently emphasizes how authentic these profiles feel compared to both classic tube heads (Mesa, for example) and other digital modelers.

  • The new MK2 edition enhances this reputation, with claims from Kemper of even greater detail and clarity in tone. Early users report immediate, gig-ready sound within minutes of setup, even when new to digital amp processors.
  • Access to more than 20,000 community profiles dramatically expands tonal options, users can audition, tweak, and store a huge variety of amp/cabinet sounds, tailoring patches on-the-fly or at home.
  • The 600 watt Class D amplifier supplies plenty of clean headroom for live use into 8 or 16 ohm speaker loads, with robust outputs for monitors or cabinets.
  • Some users do notice a slight reduction in dynamic push compared to their reference tube stacks, but remark on the impeccable precision, weight savings, and practicality on stage.

Integrated Effects, Looper, and USB Audio: Set for Modern Workflows

The MK2 expands to seven new effects slots, allowing more complex rigs with less compromise. Effects quality is consistently rated as professional, with usable reverbs, delays, modulation, and dynamics. The noise gate, mod rate and intensity, delay and reverb controls remain instantly accessible by dedicated knobs, with detailed parameter editing on the main screen.

  • The Looper is now extended to two minutes, responding instantly and with significantly reduced loading times. This noticeably improves both live looping and rehearsal workflow.
  • Multi-channel USB audio (8-channel) now allows for seamless recording, playback, and re-amping directly into digital audio workstations, crucial for modern home and professional studios.
  • The unit also supports a full MIDI interface, ground lift switches, and a USB SDHC card slot for profiles and firmware, assuring compatibility with almost any modern setup.

Connectivity and Interface: Complete Signal Integration

The PowerRack+ MK2 covers every modern connection scenario. Standard quarter inch jack and XLR inputs and outputs, dedicated speaker, monitor, direct and auxiliary sends, S/PDIF, and both USB A and B assure quick integration with pedalboards, front-of-house, and studio environments. Two footswitch/pedal inputs give further flexibility for custom setups. The remote controller, included in this bundle, is regarded as "almost necessary" by many players, enabling quick patch changes and performance mode switching without menu-diving.

Field Impressions: Usability and Sound in Practice

  • Users from both tube and digital backgrounds found the transition easy, thanks to intuitive rig management and logical layouts, despite the abundance of buttons.
  • Full patch setup, including group presets for an entire setlist, can be dialed in within minutes, with immediate recall and precise volume balancing.
  • Build quality of both the main rack and remote footswitch is consistently highlighted, suitable for years of professional use.

One typical field comment notes the reduction in back strain versus lugging traditional heads, without feeling like they're sacrificing studio-quality sound. For those attached to the dynamic "push" of real tubes, it's noted that the Kemper gets very close but some will still keep their legacy amp for reference or specific gigs.

Conclusion: Pro-Level Solution for Gigging and Studio

The Kemper Profiler PowerRack+ Remote MK2 is a substantial evolution in amp modeling, retaining its user-driven workflow while substantially improving speed, connectivity, and flexibility. It suits professionals seeking the convenience of digital, the depth of real profiling, and robust live-ready features. Its price places it firmly in the advanced category, but the capabilities match the investment, making it highly recommended for gigging musicians and studio professionals alike.

The last word from the bench

The Kemper Profiler PowerRack+ Remote MK2 stands out by merging excellent sound fidelity, faster operation, and unmatched flexibility in a lightweight rack format. Its user interface can demand a learning curve, but it rewards users with high customization and broad connectivity. Integrated power, vast tone libraries, and efficient workflow make it a pro tool for demanding musicians. Its price is justified for anyone seeking convenience and authenticity without compromise.
