Harley Benton EX-84 Modern VW

The Harley Benton EX-84 Modern VW delivers an eye-catching Explorer-style design, solid playability, and strong value for $285. Its main compromises are inconsistent reports of neck dive and a selector switch that can feel cheap, while the active pickups may not suit players seeking a precise, bright sound.

Harley Benton EX-84 Modern VW review

The Harley Benton EX-84 Modern VW is an Explorer-style electric guitar with an assertive silhouette, active pickups and a listed price of $285. Its white finish and black hardware make a strong first impression, while the set nyatoh neck and ebony fingerboard give it a more substantial specification than the price might suggest. It is a compelling choice for players drawn to hard rock and metal, though the shape and neck balance deserve consideration before buying.

The body and neck are both made from nyatoh, and the 22-fret fingerboard is ebony with white dot inlays. The 628 mm scale is shorter than a typical Fender-style scale, and the neck has a Slim Taper C profile. Published thickness measurements are 22.5 mm at the first fret and 25 mm at the 12th. The fingerboard radius is 305 mm, or 12 inches, and the nut is a 42 mm Graph Tech Tusq XL. The gloss Vintage White finish is paired with black hardware.

Build, setup and playability

Many owners report that their guitar arrived ready to play, with comfortable string height, acceptable intonation and well-finished frets. Several describe the fretwork as smooth and polished, and some found little or no setup work necessary. That said, individual experiences vary. Other buyers report rough fret ends, a dry fingerboard, a high string action, or small finish and cosmetic flaws. The sensible expectation at this price is a good instrument that should still be inspected on arrival.

The neck is not especially thin. Players who like a fuller, rounded grip may find it comfortable and supportive, while fans of very slim necks may prefer something else. The jumbo frets and broad, gently curved fingerboard suit bends and chord work, and owners commonly praise the instrument's feel once adjusted to personal preference. Its seated ergonomics are generally considered comfortable, although the Explorer outline can take a little getting used to.

Balance is the main concern for standing players. A number of owners report neck dive, while others find the guitar comfortable on a strap or describe no noticeable balance problem. Strap choice and individual playing position can affect the experience, but the reports are mixed enough that players sensitive to neck dive should try one before committing. The angular body is also large and can be awkward in tight spaces.

Pickups and controls

The EX-84 Modern VW uses active Roswell LZ56 and LZ51 humbuckers in the bridge and neck positions, respectively. Controls consist of master volume, master tone and a three-way pickup selector. Owners' impressions of the pickups differ, but a recurring description is a thick, warm voice with substantial output. They can work well for rock and heavier styles, and some players are satisfied with their sound for both distorted and clean parts.

Other players find the pickups dark or muddy, particularly when a part needs tight low-end response and clear note separation. They are not a guaranteed match for the familiar, sharply defined sound associated with particular high-end active pickups. A few owners also report audible noise, while others praise the tone straight from the box. An amplifier's settings and the player's preferred sound will make a considerable difference. If you expect a very precise, tightly controlled metal tone, budget for testing the pickups carefully or changing them later.

The selector switch is a more consistent weak point in owner feedback. Several describe it as loose or flimsy, even when it functions correctly. The listed hardware includes a WSC Tune-O-Matic bridge and HB by Jinho J-03 tuning machines. Some customer accounts mention different tuners, including locking models, so do not assume that every reported hardware detail applies to this exact specification. A case or gig bag is not included.

Verdict

At $285, the Harley Benton EX-84 Modern VW offers distinctive Explorer styling, a set neck, an ebony fingerboard and active humbuckers at an unusually accessible price. Its strongest points are its looks, comfortable playing feel for many users, and the generally positive reports about setup and fretwork. The Roswell pickups can deliver satisfying rock and metal tones, though their definition and noise performance are not universally praised.

Buy it for the shape, the specification and the chance to get a convincing heavy-guitar platform without spending much. Go in with realistic expectations about quality control, the selector switch and possible neck dive. Players who need a particular polished active-pickup sound or a reliably balanced guitar for standing performance may want to compare alternatives first. For players open to a setup or future hardware changes, the EX-84 Modern VW makes a strong case for its price.

What bugged me

  • Neck dive is a recurring concern when playing with a strap, though balance reports vary.

  • Several buyers describe the pickup selector as loose or flimsy.
  • Reported finish, setup, fret, and hardware issues vary between individual instruments, so inspection after delivery is sensible.

Is it the right one for you?

Good pick if

A strong fit for Explorer fans, budget-conscious rock and metal players, and beginners who want a distinctive guitar with upgrade potential. Also suits players comfortable checking the setup and making small adjustments.

Look elsewhere if

Less suitable for players who need dependable balance while standing, a slim neck, or highly precise and bright stock pickup tones. Skip it if you expect flawless finish and hardware consistency without inspecting the individual guitar.

What other players say

Customer feedback is largely favorable about the guitar's appearance, value, playability, fretwork, and tuning stability. Many buyers say it arrives ready to play and works well for rock or metal, while opinions on the active Roswell pickups range from satisfying to too dark or indistinct. Neck dive and a loose-feeling selector are recurring criticisms, and a smaller number of owners report finish, setup, or hardware faults on their individual instruments.

This is a very comfortable guitar straight out of the box, and I was happy with the condition and the overall playability.
The selector switch feels very cheap. It works fine but the overall construction is lackluster, like it needs a tighting.
The build quality and setup were miles ahead of what I was expecting for the price.

Before you decide

Questions players ask

Are the stock pickups suitable for metal?

They have active output and many owners find them effective for metal and hard rock. Others describe them as dark or muddy, so players who need tight, clearly separated notes may prefer different pickups.

Does the guitar suffer from neck dive?

Some owners report noticeable neck dive while standing, while others find their guitar balanced. The shape and strap-button placement make balance worth checking with your own strap.

Is it comfortable for a first electric guitar?

Many owners, including beginners, find it comfortable and well set up. Its large Explorer-style body may take some adjustment, and the neck is described by some players as fairly substantial.

Does it come with a case or gig bag?

No. The listed specifications state that neither a case nor a gig bag is included.

Should I expect to upgrade anything?

Not necessarily. The guitar is playable as supplied, but reviews commonly mention replacing or tightening the selector switch, and some players choose different pickups for a clearer or more specific sound.

The last word from the bench

This is a persuasive budget choice for players who want an Explorer-style guitar for rock and metal without spending much. Buyers often praise the setup, fretwork, tuning stability, and overall value, but the pickup sound is divisive and some examples have shown finish or setup flaws. Try it seated and standing if possible, and budget for a switch or pickup change if those parts do not meet your needs. At this price, it is also a capable platform for later upgrades.
