Gretsch G6636-RF Richard Fortus Black: Signature Semi-Hollow Test

The Gretsch G6636-RF Richard Fortus Black sits at the intersection of legacy and modern performance, designed for and with the Guns N' Roses guitarist. This Japanese-made semi-hollow instrument leans on classic Gretsch heritage but adds features that respond directly to a touring player's needs. With a price set firmly in the premium bracket, the big questions revolve around tone, feel, and quality, so I took it through its paces both unplugged and amplified.

Construction and Materials

Gretsch builds the G6636-RF entirely with laminated maple on the body, top, and neck. This three-layered maple design delivers the lively resonance expected from a semi-hollow construction, while the central block inside the body reduces feedback and adds sustain. The body is tied together visually and structurally with white and black binding, a detail that's sharp against the gloss black finish.

The neck, a comfortable "Standard U" shape, extends into an ebony fingerboard fitted with 22 medium jumbo frets. Pearloid "Neo-Classic" thumbnail inlays offer orientation and a nod to vintage Gretsch styling. Gretsch fits the nut with a Graph Tech TUSQ XL unit, giving consistency for tuning stability and vibrato-free bends. The scale length is 24.61 inches, with a radius of 12.01 inches and a nut width of 1.69 inches, inviting familiar electric playability while favoring string bends and chords alike.

Hardware and Appointments

The hardware specification is straightforward and gig-ready. The bridge is a TonePros TP6 Tune-O-Matic style for precise intonation, paired with a V-Stoptail tailpiece, no vibrato system here, which will please those preferring stability over pitch effects. The Grover Rotomatic DieCast tuning machines contribute solid tuning performance with precise movement.

Other features include nickel hardware, a tortoise pickguard emblazoned with the signature Gretsch logo and Falcon graphic, and a set of nickel-plated steel strings (.010 to.046 gauge) out of the box. Each guitar ships in its own hard case, reinforcing the premium status.

Electronics and Controls

The G6636-RF uses a pair of FilterTron humbucking pickups, a classic choice for Gretsch semi-hollows. Each pickup has distinct character, combining harmonic richness with tight low end and clear attack. Wiring is classic Gretsch: a master volume control with treble bleed (preserving highs as you roll back the pot), a master tone knob featuring a no-load function (removing it from circuit when fully open for maximum clarity), and a three-way selector switch for logical access to bridge, neck, and combined tones.

Playability and Feel

Sitting down with the guitar, it is immediately comfortable, medium in weight for a semi-hollow, well-balanced on a strap and only slightly neck-heavy if you play seated. The laminated maple and center block design lead to reduced weight compared to a fully solid-body, while feedback issues are much less pronounced than a true hollow body.

The "Standard U" neck offers a substantial yet fast grip, filling the hand without being too chunky. Fret edges are well-finished, and the ebony fingerboard is a highlight, slick and resonant under the fingers. Medium jumbo frets grant fluid bends and rewarding playability, regardless of position on the neck. The cutaway allows excellent access to upper frets, supporting both rhythm and lead work.

Sound and Performance

  • With clean amplifier settings, the FilterTron humbuckers provide chime and airy character, a familiar upper-mid Gretsch voice but with the focus and response you expect from a signature instrument.
  • When adding gain or stacking effects, the guitar retains string separation and clarity. The midrange stays tight, even when pushing the amp into more compressed realms, making it suitable for everything from indie rock cleans to classic hard rock drive.
  • The unique master volume configuration means that nuanced volume adjustments yield dynamic changes in tone, especially with the treble bleed circuit preventing any dulling of the highs at lower volume settings.

User reports and stage experience confirm these impressions, highlighting the instrument's build quality, many claim only the most exclusive makers like Paul Reed Smith come close in terms of finish. Feedback control is reliable, and the sound palette remains versatile even in high-pressure live mixes. While some found a slight neck-heaviness, this is a minor and manageable point relative to the overall design balance.

What Sets the G6636-RF Apart?

It's the sum of well-chosen details that makes the Gretsch Richard Fortus Black stand out. The pairing of the laminated maple and ebony, the refined pickups, and the streamlined control layout make for an instrument that handles both onstage demands and studio nuance. There's a clear sense of collaboration between artist and maker, each tweak addresses a pro's needs without sacrificing heritage flavor.

Conclusion: For Whom is this Guitar?

The Gretsch G6636-RF Richard Fortus Black targets players searching for high-end semi-hollow versatility without excess complication. If you value classic aesthetics, tight build tolerances, and an intuitive control setup that supports expressive volume work, this model is well worth considering. This is a very beautiful instrument that has been crafted with a lot of skills for sure. The built quality is unmatched - I've owned over 40 guitars in my life and only PRS may come close to the built quality of this guitar I would say.
Just received it a day ago and after several hours of testing, I can say it sounds amazing on clean as well as with various effects.
Great model, Fortus really did a great job with applying his long-time Gretsch experience and working with the company to create this.
