What other players say
Buyers highlight the instrument's exceptional sound, elegant appearance, and superb playability, comparing it favorably against other high-end guitars. One minor disappointment was noted regarding a mismatch between product photos and hardware details received, but the quality of sound and build overwhelmingly overshadow this. Owners consistently express strong satisfaction with its classic tone and feel.
but this paula surpasses everything! in terms of sound and looks
I am completely thrilled.
This is a beautiful instrument to play, and also looks great. My only slight bug bear was in the bigbe tremolo assembly, in the photographs it has a black inlay, but the Guitar sent was all in gold. But the instrument plays so beautifully and sound so great I can live with that.

Gibson LP 57 Custom 3PU Bigsby VOS: Custom Shop Tone and Vintage Authenticity
The Gibson LP 57 Custom 3PU Bigsby VOS is a top-tier reissue made in the USA at Gibson's Custom Shop. Faithful to its 1957 inspiration and priced at $6799, this instrument targets the professional or the collector seeking classic Les Paul sound with some exclusive features. With its triple-humbucker setup, period-correct components and vintage aesthetic, it stands out among modern Les Paul offerings.
Construction, Materials and Finish
The body and neck are both crafted from a single piece of mahogany, favoring the guitar's resonance and weight distribution. There is no maple top here, unlike many Les Pauls from other years; the 1957 Custom authentically pairs a mahogany body with a mahogany top. Weighing in at 4.4 kg (just under 9.7 lbs), the guitar feels substantial yet manageable on a strap.
The ebony fingerboard gives a dense, slick playing surface, equipped with 22 frets. Fingerboard inlays and the headstock feature the Custom-style mother-of-pearl designs, further underlining the luxurious vibe. The finish is understated and authentically vintage: "Antique Ebony," not a stark jet black, but slightly muted, replicates decades of aging in a subtle, non-relic'd way thanks to the VOS (Vintage Original Specifications) process. Gold hardware, from the tuners (Gold Waffle Back) to the bridge and pickup covers, provides a fitting contrast to the dark body.
Hardware and Components
The most eye-catching component is the Bigsby-style vibrato bridge, a classic tremolo that sets this apart from most Les Pauls. This Bigsby unit is paired with Gibson's ABR-1 bridge and classic stopbar tailpiece arrangement, maintaining tuning stability as far as possible for this kind of vintage-leaning hardware.
The machine heads are vintage-correct gold "Waffle Back," which turn smoothly and hold tuning as expected for an instrument in this class. The instrument ships with a hard case and certificate of authenticity, essential for Custom Shop collectors.
Electronics: Three Unpotted AlNiCo 3 Custombucker Humbuckers
The triple-humbucker wiring defines both the visuals and the range of this Les Paul. All three pickups are unpotted Custombuckers with Alnico 3 magnets, voiced like the real 1950s PAFs. The lack of potting means a more open, less dampened sound, allowing for greater harmonic complexity but potentially more susceptible to feedback at high volumes.
- Bridge Pickup: Bold, with prominent upper mids and a hint of compression. Classic, assertive Les Paul rock and blues tones.
- Middle Pickup: Woodier and uniquely throaty. Blending bridge/middle or neck/middle via the selector can yield surprisingly glassy tones, rare for a Les Paul.
- Neck Pickup: The sound here is warm, smooth and classic, perfect for jazz or singing solos, with just enough clarity from the unpotted wind.
The standard three-way toggle lets you select bridge, neck, or a combination of neck and middle. This configuration doesn't offer exotic switching as on some modern three-pickup guitars, maintaining period accuracy but with less tonal flexibility than might be expected by today's standards.
Playability and User Experience
The set neck construction (glued-in joint) and ebony board provide a fast, authoritative feel. The medium scale length (628 mm, or roughly 24.7 inches) ensures a familiar Les Paul tactile response. The fretwork is precise, with comfortable action right out of the box. The Bigsby system, while true to the period, does add some weight and slightly limits the break angle over the bridge. It offers impressively smooth pitch modulation but, as always with vintage-style vibratos, will never rival modern double-locking systems for extreme dives or perfect tuning stability. Feedback from players also mentions small detail shifts, such as variations in Bigsby inlay color, but not at the cost of overall enjoyment.
Sound Character and Applications
Plugged in, the LP 57 Custom 3PU delivers the thick, dynamic humbucker sound expected from a 1950s-style Gibson. The triple Custombucker configuration expands the tonal palette. The unpotted windings enhance harmonic overtones, making both clean and saturated tones shimmer with complexity. The sustain is generous thanks to the dense mahogany construction and set neck design. The guitar excels in classic rock, blues and jazz. The Bigsby adds a layer of expressive, subtle vibrato not often available on a standard Les Paul, ideal for retro textures or surf-inspired licks.
Included Accessories and Overall Impression
The instrument ships with a robust Gibson Custom Shop hard case and a certificate of authenticity. There is no gig bag included (none would be expected at this level). The overall build quality, attention to detail, and sound put it at the high end of the Les Paul reissue spectrum.
For players seeking an authentic recreation of the late-1950s Black Beauty experience, with the added expressive power of a Bigsby and the tonal options of three pickups, the Gibson LP 57 Custom 3PU Bigsby VOS is a serious contender. The price is significant, but the craftsmanship, historic tone and vintage appeal leave little else to wish for in this category.
The last word from the bench
This model stands as a showcase of Gibson's Custom Shop excellence with top-tier materials, outstanding tonal range, and the authentic spirit of the 1957 original. The triple humbucker setup and Bigsby tremolo provide both versatility and vintage vibrancy. While the price is considerable and a couple of hardware nuances were noted, this is an exceptional instrument for serious players and collectors. The Gibson LP 57 Custom 3PU Bigsby VOS is a high-end, iconic guitar that lives up to its reputation.
