Evh Custom Shop Wolfgang SWP: Construction and Body Materials

The Evh Custom Shop Wolfgang SWP stands as a signature electric guitar rooted in premium craftsmanship and a deliberate feature set. The body is made entirely from mahogany, a classic tonewood favored for its warmth and resonance. This is complemented by a solid, plain soft lead maple top, arched for both aesthetic appeal and tonal brightness. The 5-ply body binding provides durability and a visual sense of depth, making the guitar stand out in its category. Its finish, described as Snow White Pearl, is an unusual yet striking choice that pairs well with the overall luxury focus of the instrument.

Neck, Fingerboard, and Playability

The guitar features a mahogany neck topped with an ebony fingerboard, another high-end combination offering stability and a fast-playing feel. Ebony is dense and smooth, supporting articulate note attack and long sustain. The fingerboard is adorned with genuine mother of pearl inlays, enhancing its premium presentation. It hosts 22 vintage-style frets, which are suited for expressive lead and rhythm work. With a scale length of 648 mm (25.5 inches), it adheres to the standard measurement found on many iconic instruments, supporting both string tension and clarity.

The nut width of 41.3 mm is fairly conventional, providing a balanced feel for chord and lead play. Whether for broad bends or intricate fingerstyle, this measurement strikes a middle ground for most hand shapes.

Electronics: Seymour Duncan Humbucker Pair

Evh's choice of a double humbucker (HH) pickup system on the Wolfgang SWP involves two well-established Seymour Duncan models. The bridge position is equipped with a Seymour Duncan JB Trembucker, which is known for its hot output and versatile tonal range, ideal for driving leads and heavy rhythms. The neck position features a Seymour Duncan '59 Standard, a staple for its warm, rounded clean sounds and rich harmonics under gain. Switching between pickups is handled by a standard three-way selector, allowing straightforward access to a range of tones, from crisp cleans to saturated overdrive.

Tremolo, Tuning Hardware, and Adjustments

The bridge is the EVH Floyd Rose Tremolo, specially engineered for stability even under extreme whammy bar use thanks to its double locking design. This ensures precise performance and tuning integrity during aggressive play. An EVH D-Tuna is fitted to the bridge system, facilitating instant drop D tuning by simply pulling the D-Tuna device, without needing to retune. This quick adjustment is especially relevant for performers needing tuning flexibility mid-set.

Tuning machines are EVH-branded Gotoh units with pearl buttons, offering solid gear ratios for precise adjustments as well as a touch of visual class, tying into the instrument's premium intent. The gold-colored hardware rounds out the hardware set, providing additional aesthetic value.

Included Accessories and Build Origin

The Evh Custom Shop Wolfgang SWP ships in an included hard case, providing ample protection for transport and storage; there is no gigbag supplied. As a United States-made model, the Wolfgang SWP is subject to meticulous standards associated with the EVH Custom Shop. While it is a signature instrument for Eddie Van Halen, the guitar's features and layout do not restrict it solely to Van Halen repertoire. The combination of tonewoods, electronics, and player-focused hardware deliver versatility expected in a flagship-level instrument.
