Harley Benton SC-Special Faded White review

The Harley Benton SC-Special Faded White is a single-cutaway electric guitar built around a familiar, stripped-down formula: two P-90 pickups, a wraparound bridge, and separate volume and tone controls for each pickup. At a listed price of $237, it aims to deliver a direct, rock-focused instrument without asking buyers to pay for decorative extras. It has been available since October 2020 and is part of Harley Benton's Vintage Series.

There is a discrepancy in the supplied specifications. One listing identifies the body and neck as nyatoh, while the detailed description calls them mahogany and specifies a set-in mahogany neck. The fingerboard is listed as amaranth in both descriptions. Buyers should confirm the exact construction with the seller rather than assume these conflicting entries describe the same instrument.

Construction and hardware

The guitar has a 628 mm scale, a 43 mm nut width, a 60s C-shaped neck profile, and a 305 mm fingerboard radius. Its 22 medium-jumbo frets have dot inlays. The headstock uses vintage-style tuning machines with a 15:1 gear ratio, and the nut is graphite. A three-ply black, white, and black pickguard contrasts with the Faded White Satin finish. The finish is satin rather than glossy, though owners disagree about its exact appearance: some describe it as clean white, while others find it closer to cream or off-white.

A WSC wraparound bridge keeps the hardware simple. It allows individual string intonation adjustment, but some owners report that the usable adjustment range can be tight. One reviewer had no trouble setting intonation on their instrument; another found the saddle travel insufficient on a previous SC-Special. Those reports point to variation between examples, so check intonation during setup instead of assuming every guitar will arrive correctly adjusted.

The listed factory strings are.010 to.046. No case or gig bag is included. The guitar has no tremolo system, which suits its fixed-bridge design and keeps the setup uncomplicated.

Pickups and controls

Two Roswell P90S-N pickups use Alnico 5 magnets. The controls comprise two volume knobs, two tone knobs, and a three-way pickup selector. Owners commonly describe the pickups as lively and strong, with a clear single-coil attack and a fuller midrange than many conventional single-coil designs. Several report satisfying clean tones, while bridge-pickup settings handle classic rock and heavier overdrive well. The neck pickup is often praised for warm, rounded sounds.

Opinions on the bridge pickup are less uniform. Some players like its bite and output; others find it nasal, muddy, or too aggressive in their setup. P-90 pickups can also produce hum, especially with high gain. One owner reported feedback severe enough to return the guitar, while other players found noise manageable. Amplifier settings, room conditions, and pickup height all affect the result.

Setup and owner experience

Reports on out-of-box setup range from excellent to frustrating. Some buyers received an instrument with comfortable action, clean frets, and good intonation. Others needed to adjust the truss rod, bridge height, nut slots, or pickup height before the guitar played as they wanted. A poorly cut nut, uneven fret heights, rough fret surfaces, sharp fret ends, and controls rubbing against the body appear in individual accounts. Several owners also mention finish marks or small cosmetic flaws.

These are not universal defects, but the mixed reports make inspection important. Check that open strings ring cleanly, the guitar stays in tune, the frets do not buzz at your preferred action, and the bridge can intonate each string. Confirm that both pickups work and can be adjusted to a useful height. If you do not handle setup work yourself, budget for a technician to inspect the instrument.

There are positive examples too. Some buyers describe their guitars as cleanly finished and ready to play straight from the box. Others say a modest setup brought the instrument into comfortable playing condition. Several owners like its relatively light feel, balanced body, and comfortable neck. One reviewer reported a weight of 2.7 kg, but that is a single example, not a stated model-wide specification.

Verdict

The SC-Special Faded White offers an appealing, no-frills P-90 layout and a useful range of sounds for blues, punk, and rock. Its strongest case is the combination of responsive pickups, straightforward controls, and a satin-finished vintage-style design at a low price. The tradeoff is inconsistent setup and finish quality, with some examples needing more work than others. At $237, it makes sense for players willing to inspect and adjust their instrument. If you expect flawless finishing and dependable setup without any follow-up, buying from a seller with a clear return policy is the safer choice.

The P90 pickups do all the P90 things. Nice single coil clean up, but they scream when you hit them with some gain!
Great looks and feel. Bit underwhelmed by the sounds but for the price it’s great fun.

Before you decide

Questions players ask

Are the stock P90 pickups worth keeping?

Most reviewers like their punchy, lively sound and see no urgent need to replace them. Some find the bridge pickup harsh or muddy, and a few report excessive feedback.

Does it arrive ready to play?

Some owners received examples with a playable setup, while others needed to adjust the neck, action, intonation, nut, or pickup height. A setup may be necessary.

Is the Faded White finish bright white?

Owners describe it as a satin, matte white or cream shade. At least one reviewer received a noticeably yellowish example, so the exact appearance may vary.

Are the bridge and tuning machines reliable?

Reviews are mixed. Many owners say the tuning machines hold pitch and the wraparound bridge is adjustable, while others report tuning instability or limited adjustment range.

Who is this guitar best suited to?

It suits players who want an affordable P90 guitar for rock, blues, or punk and are comfortable checking or improving the setup. It is less suitable for buyers expecting uniform, flawless quality control.

The last word from the bench

This is a compelling budget guitar for players drawn to a simple double-cut design and the bite of P90 pickups. Many owners report a comfortable neck and satisfying sounds, while others describe setup problems or visible flaws. The stock hardware is generally usable, but individual examples may need attention to the nut, frets, pickup height, or bridge. Buy it for its value and sound, with realistic expectations about consistency.
