Overview and Design
The Fryette Power Station PS-2A, on the market since late 2016, targets guitarists who want real tube amp sound at any volume, without sacrificing tone or feel. At 6.8 kg and with a full steel chassis, the PS-2A feels solid and ready for the rigors of frequent use. The front panel is both practical and uncluttered, featuring three large controls for presence, depth, and level, alongside a series of switches for tone shaping and impedance matching. Detailed labeling and a no-nonsense layout mean setup is quick even in cramped or dark environments.
Attenuation and Power Management
Unlike traditional passive attenuators, Fryette's Power Station employs a 50-watt tube power amplifier, loaded with two 6L6 tubes. This core design choice lets the PS-2A convert your amp's output to a line-level signal, then re-amplify it to speaker level with its own tube section. The result is a continuously variable volume control, the attenuation is entirely stepless, letting you drop a 100-watt head to whisper level, or make a 5-watt amp gig-ready, all without unsatisfying tonal compromises.
Real-world testing confirms the transparency of Fryette's approach: users consistently report no significant loss of highs or lows at realistic stage or studio volumes. Several reviewers have compared it favorably to passive and solid-state attenuators, here the feel under the fingers and amp character remain intact. Some report a subtle difference in tactile punch and frequency focus at extreme volume reduction, but it is less pronounced than with purely resistive attenuator designs.
The PS-2A offers selectable 4, 8, or 16 ohms for both amp input and speaker output, making it universally compatible with most tube and solid state heads, combos, and cabinet configurations. This flexibility is a big plus for modern gigging or studio rigs.
Tube Amplification and Tone Integrity
There was initial skepticism among amp purists about the tonal imprint of the 6L6-based re-amplification stage, especially with iconic British amplifiers that typically run on EL34 or KT88 tubes. Feedback indicates that the PS-2A leaves the character of the amp largely intact, sometimes even adding a touch of clarity and body to the sound. The reactivity of the circuit means classic amps "open up" at manageable volume, and most users found no unwanted coloration; if anything, the amp's saturation and response are preserved at a level unmatched by passive boxes.
Silent Recording and Re-amping
One major draw of the Power Station is its all-analog reactive load, which enables completely silent direct amp recording. The device provides both unbalanced and XLR balanced outputs for clean signal routing to your DAW or interface. Many players have successfully run classic heads and modern modeling preamps directly into the PS-2A, using it as a high-headroom tube power amplifier for speaker cab driving, DI recording, or live sound reinforcement.
In silent mode, the Fryette delivers dynamic signal at the line out. With impulse response or cabinet simulation downstream, authentic feel and dynamic response are routinely praised. This flexibility makes the PS-2A suitable both for home tracking and high-end stage setups, any situation where real amp performance must meet modern workflow demands.
Effects Loop and Additional Features
Notably, the integrated series effects loop adds modern flexibility to vintage and minimalist amps lacking their own. The loop is adjustable for both line- and pedal-level signals, preserving effect clarity and placement in your chain with minimal noise or coloration. Even demanding users compliment the loop's reliability and transparency, which opens up effects placement options like reverb or delay after tube saturation, otherwise impossible with many classic heads.
The PS-2A's additional controls, like low and high frequency tone shaping switches, provide further tailoring for room, guitar, or amp variables, letting you offset lost brightness or compensate for specific cabinets. Adjustment is linear and noise-free, with no detents, supporting fine calibration for any gig, rehearsal, or session.
Real-World Impressions and Criticisms
- Build and Reliability: The build quality is compared to industrial gear, tight tolerances, solid switches, and high-grade hardware. Reliability is generally excellent, with only rare reports of trouble with extreme output from high-headroom amps.
- Fan Noise: One noted downside is a fixed-speed fan audible in very quiet studio settings. While not overly loud, it could be a factor for critical silent recording or home use.
- Weight: At nearly 15 lbs, the PS-2A is substantial. This is part of its robust tube-power design, but for some, portability is a consideration.
- Price: At $1,111, the PS-2A is a significant investment. Most users, however, judge it fair for the unmatched feature set and sonic transparency offered.
Versatility in Use
- Reduce powerful tube amps to home-friendly levels with no loss of dynamic sensitivity
- Drive guitar cabinets with preamps, modelers, or computer audio
- Add a transparent effects loop to vintage circuits
- Engage in silent direct recording with reactive authenticity
The Fryette Power Station PS-2A is a flexible piece of engineering that not only protects your hearing and keeps your neighbors happy, but also makes your best amp tones accessible anywhere, at any time, and at any volume. While not cheap, it may well be a once-in-a-lifetime purchase for any serious guitarist seeking freedom from volume limits without losing touch with the magic of real tubes and moving air.

What other players say
Customers consistently praise the Fryette Power Station PS-2A for its ability to maintain authentic tube amp tone across any volume, with most noting transparent attenuation and excellent dynamic feel. The reactive load and versatile connectivity are highlighted as game-changing for both live and studio use. While a few mention minor tonal changes under extreme attenuation and some rare technical failures with high-powered amps, satisfaction is overall very high with particular appreciation for the added effects loop and build quality. The price and weight are noted drawbacks but widely considered justified by its performance.
The PS-2A really decreases volume of my amplifier without losing its tone. Also it makes home recording easy pie as via silent recording option you can take clear amp signal without anything else that mic would pick up.
My Marshall Silver Jubilee 2555x and my 2203x came alive as soon as I connected them to the Power Station, notes are more pronounced, have a lot of saturation, more sustain and my Marshalls roar.
The only thing missing for me would be a speaker simulation for practicing with headphones. But for the sound, it's galaxies ahead compared to something like the Oxbox.
