Overview: ESP LTD AW-XJ7B ET OG BLKS Signature Model

The ESP LTD AW-XJ7B ET OG BLKS is the signature 7-string guitar created for Alex Wade, known for its craftsmanship, hardware technology, and premium build materials. Presented in a Black Open Grain Satin finish, this instrument showcases a blend of advanced features aimed at modern guitarists seeking both performance reliability and playability. With a listed price of $2,599 and availability starting March 2025, it targets serious players demanding consistent intonation, long-scale stability, and premium appointments in the extended-range market.

Construction and Materials

The body is carved from swamp ash, resulting in a light yet resonant base that balances clarity and punch. ESP skips a separate top, making the natural grain and satin finish the visual centerpiece. The bolt-on neck design uses a five-piece combination of maple, walnut, and padauk, reinforcing stability while keeping the instrument's weight manageable. The fingerboard is Macassar ebony, chosen for its fast attack and smooth feel, and it's fitted with 24 extra-jumbo stainless steel frets that resist wear and facilitate aggressive bends or intricate legato.

Electronics and Hardware

This model is a single-pickup configuration with a Dimarzio D-Activator 7 humbucker installed at the bridge. This setup delivers aggressive output ideal for high-gain applications, producing clarity under heavy distortion while maintaining midrange definition for technical riffing. Control is focused and practical: a single volume knob employs a push/pull function for expanded tonal access, allowing players to shift voicing for rhythm and lead work seamlessly.

• Pickup: Dimarzio D-Activator 7 (bridge position, humbucking)
• Controls: Master volume with push/pull coil switch

The hardware package stands out, especially with the inclusion of the Evertune F model bridge. Evertune's technology ensures rock-solid tuning stability over the string lifespan, accommodating aggressive playing or temperature swings without adjustment. The gold saddles add a visual highlight to a mostly monochrome aesthetic. LTD locking tuners make string changes fast and secure, important in high-tension 7-string setups.

Playability and Ergonomics

The neck's thin U profile is comfortable for both chording and fast technical passages, especially across the wider 7-string configuration. The 27-inch (686 mm) scale length keeps the low B (or drop A) string tight and responsive, with little flab even at lower tunings. The 400 mm radius Macassar ebony fingerboard strikes a practical balance, flat enough for sweeping arpeggios or tapping, yet curved enough to prevent fatigue on extended sessions. The extra-jumbo stainless steel frets allow for low action and effortless bends. At 48 mm, the nut provides the necessary space for clean voicings, especially when moving between rhythm and lead.

Sound and Field Impressions

The swamp ash construction ensures a vibrant, percussive sound that favors articulate riffing and complex chord work. Coupled with the Dimarzio D-Activator 7 pickup, it delivers a focused and dynamic tone, excelling in high-gain scenarios where tightness and clarity are paramount. Pushing the volume pot engages additional tonal options through the coil split, making it possible to access brighter or less-saturated sounds on demand.

Real-world feedback highlights the Evertune bridge as transformative for players who demand stable intonation during long sessions or under heavy playing. Reports indicate tuning remains consistent across aggressive picking or even atmospheric shifts, reducing the time spent on adjustments. Users also praise the feel and finish, with particular appreciation for ESP's appointment choices, especially the fretwork and locking machine heads, which combine for a "set and forget" reliability.

Accessories and Finish

ESP provides a durable case rather than a gig bag, reflecting the premium positioning and recognizing the needs of touring or gigging musicians. The Black Open Grain Satin finish not only showcases the ash grain but also resists fingerprints and wear over time, ensuring the instrument remains visually striking even after extended use.

Conclusion

The ESP LTD AW-XJ7B ET OG BLKS stands out as a purpose-built, professional 7-string signature instrument. Its selection of swamp ash, Macassar ebony, and a five-piece neck, combined with the Evertune bridge and high-output bridge pickup, makes it particularly suited for metal and progressive genres where clarity and reliability matter most. The field-tested tuning stability and robust construction validate its price for demanding players. This guitar is a clear example of ESP's commitment to functional, artist-driven design, with every feature aligned for reliable, expressive performance.
