Charvel USA sel. So-Cal Style 1 HSS FR review

The Charvel USA sel. So-Cal Style 1 HSS FR is an American-made, white solid-body electric guitar built around a familiar high-performance formula: an alder body, a maple neck and fingerboard, a Floyd Rose Original tremolo, and an HSS pickup arrangement. Its bridge humbucker is a DiMarzio Super Distortion DP100, paired with two DiMarzio HS-2 DP116 single-coil pickups in the middle and neck positions. The listed price is 2,644. A hard case is included.

The specification sheet places this model in production from April 2023. It has a 648 mm (25.5-inch) scale, 22 jumbo frets, a 42.9 mm nut, and a compound fingerboard radius that moves from 305 mm to 406 mm (12 to 16 inches). Charvel calls the neck profile a Speed Neck and notes rounded fingerboard edges. Black dot inlays, black hardware, and a black anodized aluminum pickguard contrast with the white finish.

Neck feel and playing comfort

One owner describes the neck as rounder and thicker than the neck on their Japanese-made superstrat. That difference suited their preferences: after spending time with a Gibson Les Paul, they found very flat necks were not necessarily more comfortable. They reported that the Charvel remained easy to play into the upper frets, with the factory setup arriving at low action that worked well for them.

That is one player's experience, rather than a measurement of every instrument's setup. Still, it gives useful context for the Speed Neck label. The profile is not described as an ultra-thin shape. A buyer who prefers a little more substance under the thumb may find this account encouraging, while players set on a very flat neck should try one in person if possible. Rounded fingerboard edges and a compound radius are part of the design, but personal comfort will depend on hand size and technique.

Pickup layout and tonal range

The HSS configuration gives the guitar distinct options across its five-way switch. The bridge position uses the high-output Super Distortion DP100 humbucker, while the two HS-2 DP116 pickups cover the middle and neck positions. There is one volume control, with no separate tone control listed in the supplied specifications.

The owner bought the guitar in part for an '80s hard rock sound and says the pickups deliver plenty of output for that purpose. They also report a pleasing clean tone, an important counterpoint to the bridge pickup's reputation for drive. Their playing references range from heavy riffs to fast upper-register solos, both of which they found comfortable on the instrument. Those impressions are subjective, and the review does not include a controlled comparison or recorded sound samples. The pickup models and switching layout, however, make the intended versatility clear.

Floyd Rose hardware and construction

A Floyd Rose Original tremolo and Original locking saddles anchor the bridge setup. Charvel-branded die-cast tuners complete the tuning hardware, and the guitar ships with nickel-plated steel strings in.009 to.042 gauges. The locking system is a defining part of the instrument, so players should consider whether they want a double-locking tremolo and are comfortable with its setup and string-changing routine. The supplied information does not include a separate discussion of tuning stability under heavy tremolo use.

The body is alder, with no separate top specified. The maple neck is bolt-on, and the maple fingerboard carries 22 jumbo frets. One owner, who has experience with several Japanese- and US-made guitars, praised the overall craftsmanship and said they could not find a detail to criticize. They also described the factory setup as suitable for their low-action preference. That is a strong individual report, though setup can vary from instrument to instrument.

What to consider before buying

  • Included: A hard case is included. The listed package does not include a gig bag.
  • Controls: The guitar has one volume control and a five-way pickup switch.
  • Finish and hardware: The listed finish is white, with a black pickguard and black hardware.
  • Setup: One owner received an instrument with low action that suited their playing style. Confirm the setup on the specific guitar you buy.

The same owner mentioned that a truss rod wrench was missing from their package. The seller later sent the tool separately after the owner contacted customer service. That report should not be treated as confirmation that the wrench is routinely omitted, but it is worth checking the included accessories when the guitar arrives.

Verdict

The Charvel USA sel. So-Cal Style 1 HSS FR combines a familiar alder-and-maple platform with a powerful bridge humbucker, two single-coil pickups, and a Floyd Rose Original system. Its 12-to-16-inch compound radius, jumbo frets, and Speed Neck profile suit the fast-playing role suggested by its hardware and layout. The most detailed owner feedback is strongly positive, especially on build quality, factory setup, and comfort through the upper register. At 2,644, it is a considered purchase. Players looking for an American-made HSS guitar with an included case and a Floyd Rose should weigh that cost against their comfort with the locking tremolo and their preferred neck shape.

Is it the right one for you?

Good pick if

Ideal for rock and metal players who want a high-output bridge pickup, a locking tremolo, and comfortable access to upper frets. Also appealing to players seeking a versatile HSS setup with an included hard case.

Look elsewhere if

Not ideal for buyers on a tight budget or players who prefer a fixed bridge. The Floyd Rose system may also be a poor fit for anyone who wants simpler tuning and setup demands.

I have owned number of guitars (Japan made ESP, Tokai, US made Fender, Gibson LP) and I must say this has the best quality so far.
Even the guitar factory set up was perfect for my playing style (prefer low action).
I was looking for 1980s hair metal sound and this guitar definitely provides that.
